Glass Tile Redefined!

DeVerre FAQ

Why glass?

Besides its captivating beauty and timeless aesthetic, glass is a non-porous, clean, and durable choice for tile. It is a versatile surfacing or covering material that can be used for interior or exterior applications. Our elements can be used in place of ceramic tile, or as accent pieces with ceramic, natural stone, and stone veneers. Our products are environmentally friendly and can withstand normal changes in humidity and temperature. Our products should not be subject to thermal shock.

Glass is impervious to moisture and is widely considered the most sanitary surface available. We recommend the use of DeVerre Elements in kitchens and bathrooms, and anywhere else that sanitation is a consideration. DeVerre elements can also be used in a wide variety of designs for artistic or decorative applications. And remember, glass loves light!

What do you mean that glass loves light?

Always consider lighting with your DeVerre project. In kitchen applications we highly recommend the installation of under cabinet lighting. For commercial and residential applications, unique backlighting effects or spot lighting will enhance the depth and texture of our products. DeVerre elements could also be designed as specialty lighting features within many commercial or residential situations.

Where can I use DeVerre Elements?

Applications include (but are not limited to) kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, accent walls, bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels, casinos, hospitals, water features, interior and exterior lighting, hardscapes, mirrors, flooring, cabinetry, countertops, doors, demising walls and partitions, stair treads/ risers, pools, signs and many more. Honestly, your imagination is the only limiting factor!

Our elements can stand alone, or be used to accent tile or other materials. When deciding what style to use for a project, look for architectural or design materials that will blend with your DeVerre choices.

How are the elements created?

All of our elements are hand crafted by skilled artisans. Our team hand-casts 2,300 degree molten glass into our proprietary molds to create each piece. DeVerre’s molds are created by hand, and formed to capture realistic characteristics. Our textures, shapes, and compositions set our products apart from the universe of basic geometric tile. Due to the handmade nature of our products you may find slight variations in each piece.

How are the elements installed?

DeVerre Elements are installed like normal glass tile. Please see our installation guide for details.

How do I cut glass?

We recommend using a standard wet tile saw for cutting. Make sure that the saw has a diamond blade with no teeth. For the cleanest cut, use a diamond blade that is recommended for glass. Since our elements are thicker than most tiles, pass them through the saw a little slower than usual. Make sure that the water is on and flowing for lubrication! After cutting, sometimes a rough edge will occur. To smooth edges, use the side of the tile saw, or a piece of silicon carbide sand paper. Avoid scratching the face of the tile. We do not recommend scoring and snapping DeVerre elements. When cutting, plan to face the cut edge in the direction that will make it least noticeable. For best results, minimize your cutting as much as possible. Be mindful of sharp edges or pieces after cutting. Always wear safety glasses.

What are the color options?

Our unique approach to coloration allows for every installation to be customized. By choosing one or more mortar pigments, you can achieve a specialized look. Mortar pigment is a basic additive put into the thin-set by the installer. The pigment should be mixed thoroughly using a mixing attachment on a drill. For a multi-color installation, mix separate buckets of colored mortar. For color consistency, do a small test by smearing a small amount onto a towel. If you are installing on consecutive days, make sure to keep your test from the previous day so that you can match the color. Make sure that the client has seen a color sample, and is happy with the finished look.

Consult your designer or decorator to choose a color scheme for your project. Choose from our provided mortar pigment charts. Colored mortar acts as the adhesive for the elements as well as the color that is seen through the clear glass. There are many design possibilities for single tone or multi-tone color schemes. To maintain consistency during an installation, be sure to make samples of the mortar color every day.

How much should I order?

Calculate the quantity needed by measuring the square footage of the space. We recommend adding 8%-10% to square footage to insure that you will have the proper quantity after possible cutting or specialized configurations.

How do I maintain DeVerre Elements?

There is little to no maintenance required for DeVerre elements. Always use non-abrasive glass cleaners, or just a mix of water and vinegar. We suggest using a thick soft tile sponge or a natural sponge for cleaning. To clean DeVerre elements, spray down the surface with cleaner and wipe away. Tile sponges and natural sponges easily clean the textured surfaces.
